about

brothers in the darkness?

lyrics

Verse
I was just a young man when I first went to the mine,
I learned to swing a shovel, learned to keep myself alive
Learned the sweat and smoke and dust was more than I could stand,
Learned an honest days work left money in my hand

Course
Lay down your shovel pull up a chair
Gather around me miners For the story that I share
A brother in the darkness, he was a friend of mine,
And how I left him buried in the Brodhead number 9

Most of the workers there seemed to come and go,
But after a while, there was one I got to know.
We would work side by side and pay day we would find,
We’d hauled more ore out then all the rest the mine

A mislaid timber fell one day and pinned him to the ground
I heard a rumble above us, and knew it was coming down.
When he saw a meant to run, he turned a deathly pale,
Said 'you may make it out, but I’ll see you one day in hell'

I still go underground almost every day
But no one works besides me, as I toil away.
They all act so smugly with their crosses and their prayers
How many would have done the same, if they’d been standing there.
